4. LoveLife

LoveLife's Langa Y-Centre is the local branch of LoveLife (New LoveLife Trust), South Africa's national youth health organisation, and runs the flagship groundBREAKERs programme: young people aged 18–25 recruited from the community, trained as peer educators, and paid a stipend to lead HIV prevention, gender-based violence, and youth unemployment outreach, alongside sport and creative activities.

Nationally, loveLife structures this as a two-year cycle, recruiting roughly 1,000 groundBREAKERs at a time; the Langa centre currently employs 15 groundBREAKERs on this same two-year basis. That structure is also the centre's core challenge: groundBREAKERs frequently struggle to find employment once their two years end, and LoveLife's existing national "Alumni" programme, intended as a bridge into the world of work, doesn't appear to be closing that gap for Langa's own cohort. This creates a well-defined, two-part opportunity for an LSE consulting team.

Lizelle Solomon, programme coordinator at LoveLife in Langa, would want to identify and build practical pathways into entrepreneurship for these young community leaders before their contracts end, rather than leaving them to figure it out afterward.

On the organisation's side, Lizelle would be interested to explore how groundBREAKERs' skills, networks, and community standing could be turned into income-generating activities for the Langa centre itself, rather than the role remaining a pure cost centre funded entirely by donors and government departments.
