Media & Data
Before and during this journey to Alex, we encourage you to both listen and read as much as you can on South Africa. So many things are available online to help you better understand the local context.
Radio garden will provide you with a quick access to a selection of radios in Johannesburg including the talk Radio 702. The local radio Alex FM, a few blocks away from your client, although not listed on Radio Garden, is available online following this link.
Alex News is Alex’s free weekly newspaper and the Sowetan counts amongst the widely read newspapers in Johannesburg. For deeper political and economic analysis on South Africa, we would encourage you to read the Daily Maverick and Business Day.
The StatsSA website can be a excellent source of information when trying to understand the local context through data. We also highly recommend Wazimap for its digestible display of both the Census 2011 and the Household survey 2016 data. The Wazimap website will allow you to compare Alex with other ward in Johannesburg. We are really looking forward to the release of the Census 2022.
Last but not least, the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at LBS issued in 2021 knowledge pieces on Alexandra and the challenges faced there. To download, click on the thumbnails below:
