When she started in 2009, local ECDs took only children aged 18 months and older, and teenage pregnancies in the area were very high. Initially Lydia didn’t set out to run a crèche. She wanted a safe place for the babies of teenage mothers, so that the young mothers could go back to school. She also cared for the babies of low-paid mothers, such as domestic workers and petrol attendants, who often lost their jobs when they became pregnant. She planned to keep each baby only until 18 months, but the mothers ended up wanting to keep their children in Lydia’s care far beyond that age. This is how what started as a daycare centre eventually grew into a full ECD centre for children aged four months to five years.

Lydia’s key issue is financial viability. Few parents or caretakers are able to afford fees that would cover the costs of running the centre. The centre provides food including breakfast, lunch and two snacks a day. Several children attend without their caretakers paying any fees. When a child stops coming because a parent has lost a job, she invites the child back so the parent can look for work, and only some families repay her later. She would also welcome insights in the areas of marketing and administration. The centre is registered for 71 children and currently has 60. Its registration has expired, but was extended while oversight of ECDs moves from the Department of Social Development to the Department of Basic Education.

Like many others ECDS in South Africa’s townships, Sunflower ECD is run out of private residential premises. Lydia’s dream would be move out of the house and have a large, attractive, purpose-built centre that would include a section for children with special needs, run by trained staff, weekend care and larger holiday and aftercare programmes.

Ultimately, Lydia feels the main purpose for the centre is to provide a safe place for children while their parents work.

Welcome About Langa Your Clients Useful Resources 15.
