It began simply: a safe place where children could ride and where residents could bring their bicycles for repair. The hub took over a park that had become a dumping site, turned it into a community space, and built relationships with government that led to a formal partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Today the Bicycle Hub describes itself as a home for bicycles in Langa, using cycling to create jobs for young people. It runs community bicycle tours and events to promote cycling and teaches children and adults to ride &#8211; a challenging task when cycling out of necessity is sometimes associated with poverty and hardship, not to mention considered unsafe in many sections of South African society, where cars and minibuses rule the road.<\/p>\n<p>The Hub also sells bicycles at affordable prices, so that more people can get on a bike. Support from many partners has helped the hub grow, and internship programmes run with government and non-government partners have already created jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The main challenge is securing steady funding so the hub can keep going and build on what it has achieved. Mzikhona also wants to reach more young people who are ready to take up work, and to find funding for more cycling-related jobs.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term, Mzikhona wants to open more spaces where people can repair bicycles, learn to ride and teach others about cycling.
