She reports strong progress at Zeno’s Yogurt, and is actively scouting new locations with hopes of opening one or two additional branches within the year. One key change has been restructuring staff roles by separating back-end staff (food preparation, cutting and cleaning) from front-facing customer service roles. This addressed a hiring constraint, and also allows Zeno’s Yogurt to improve the customer experience and lean on people’s natural talents. Training has also shifted from infrequent sessions three to four times a year, to weekly micro-training led by area coordinators, which Zenobia feels has improved retention and consistency, compared to repeating the same content sporadically.

On employee motivation, Zeno’s Yogurt held its first of three planned wellness days, taking over 70 staff to a retreat, including team-building activities and a two-hour phone-free period for personal reflection, which received very positive feedback and helped staff bond across branches. The business also introduced “Employee of the Quarter” and “Yogurt Bowl of the Quarter” awards, coming with visible recognition such as framed pictures in branches but also bonuses and vouchers, intended to make staff feel seen and valued in a way customers can also observe.

A significant focus has been reporting and accountability. SOPs were posted at each branch outlining service standards (friendliness to customers, recapping orders for clarity, returning the correct change, wearing clean uniforms and so on), paired with a QR code allowing customers to leave direct feedback or commend specific staff. A new phone policy now requires staff to store phones with supervisors during shifts, with emergency contact numbers shared with families to maintain availability without distraction. Perhaps most impactful, a thumbprint sign-in/out system replaced the manual logbook, which had been vulnerable to staff misreporting arrival times. Implemented about six weeks ago, this has already enabled more accurate weekly and monthly attendance reporting across staff and coordinators.

Finally, Zeno’s introduced “no curbside pickup” signage at all branches to manage customer expectations and reduce conflict over service limitations, framing the policy as a management decision rather than a staff failure. They have also ordered (though not yet installed) table-top QR codes, an idea suggested by a member of the Imperial team, that will let customers join a loyalty programme and follow updates via a new WhatsApp channel and social media.

Welcome Your Clients 5.
