Much of the energy since has gone into working closely with Vuyo, the new tailor-cutter, training and putting in late nights to catch up on the tailoring side, which is a vital part of the walk-in trade.

The cutting situation has improved. After a potential hire fell through at the last minute, the team has since brought on a promising temporary cutter, easing the pressure on Vuyo. Elaine sees real long-term value in having younger staff in their thirties, expecting their energy to lead to a faster, more efficient production process. There has also been some reshuffling: Lauren, trained as a finisher, is being moved into a machinist role to fill a gap that opened when a colleague was medically boarded, with a new finisher to be hired later in the month.

A significant blow was the loss of Elaine’s “right-hand lady,” Chanel, who resigned after six and a half years. Someone has taken over at the front but was away for eight weeks for an operation; now back, she is being trained intensively through the quieter winter months. Elaine noted that while the first half of the year was hard, things are becoming more manageable as the students’ recommendations are put into practice.

Cash flow has been a particular focus. On repairs, repeat customers are often happy to pay in advance, while new customers tend to prefer paying on collection once they can see the quality of the work. Elaine hopes that within six to twelve months, most repairs can be paid for upfront. Custom tailoring is more straightforward – a 50% deposit is easier to secure because those clients already value the Coral Wetsuits brand – and taking deposits has had a clearly positive effect, making it easier to manage wages and save toward shipments.

That stronger position recently allowed the team to acquire a rare, heavy-duty commercial sewing machine. Looking further ahead, Elaine wants to build a “slush fund” to replace the mainstay blind-stitch machines over the next five years; at roughly 75K to 95K each, it is manageable with consistent planning and saving.

Elaine ended by sending warm congratulations to her team as well as some further words of encouragement: A degree is only the beginning of a practical learning journey, she says – never be fearful of challenges, keep an open mind, and listen carefully before responding.

Welcome Your Clients 10.
