I met him at the sliding door of his outside room, where he immediately spoke about the pain in his elbow ligament, an old injury he believes has resurfaced despite taking painkillers. As we walked toward the gate, I had to pause several times while he greeted the steady flow of people passing by, a reflection of how deeply connected he remains to his community.

Tumi shared openly that the journey has not been easy, admitting that there were moments when he considered giving up due to the prejudice and lack of support he often experiences within his own neighborhood. Despite this, his business continues to receive strong support from people across Alexandra and beyond. Through resilience and innovation, he has worked hard to build a more sustainable business model, relying heavily on social media to reach clients from different parts of the country. Whenever he visits tattoo clients, he also takes the opportunity to scout for refurbishment opportunities for his artwork, constantly finding ways to expand his creative reach. He noted that most of his art sales happen during the LBS period, while his ongoing efforts to revive tourism have unfortunately not yet received the support he believes is needed.

Tumi also spoke candidly about the challenges of maintaining security within his tattoo space, especially during quieter periods when business slows down. I found him actively marketing himself on Facebook, reaching out to potential clients and honestly expressing the pressure of trying to keep up with monthly bills during difficult seasons.

Yet, even amidst these hardships, his vision for the future remains inspiring. One of his upcoming projects is the creation of a powerful “Wall of Fame,” which he hopes to develop further together with the LBS Team. The initiative aims to honour heroes from across the world who played significant roles in struggles against apartheid and injustice through music, sports, art, and other forms of activism. His goal is to create greater awareness while building unity between local and international communities. Importantly, Tumi emphasized that he is not necessarily seeking financial assistance, but rather support in the form of painting materials, flags from different countries, and connections that could help bring the vision to life.

He continues to work tirelessly to preserve and care for the museum space, despite facing criticism and opposition from some individuals around him. Nevertheless, he remains fearless, passionate, and deeply committed to his craft and community. He also shared his ambition to acquire a tattoo removal machine, although he has found the equipment to be extremely expensive, and is currently open to advice or ideas on how he might eventually secure one.

Welcome Your Clients 2.
