13. Belinda Dilima & Langa Community TV
Belinda is a filmmaker who was born and raised in Langa, a township in Cape Town, and went to school there. With two other Langa filmmakers, she co-founded Langa Community TV in 2021.
The station is based in Langa, and reports on local news and newsworthy events across the Cape Town metro. It covers social issues, business, sports, NGOs, entertainment and politics. The founders first wanted to produce TV series, talk shows and short stories. Instead, much of their early work came from paid commissions: short reports on individuals about their businesses, and productions for organisations. That work helped fund the venture. Later they turned back to their own content, and began taking on unemployed young people who have left school, who now learn on the job.
For now the channel runs on YouTube. It has about 260 subscribers, and a marketing team is working towards attracting at least 1,000 by the end of September 2026. The longer-term goal is a mainstream broadcast licence from ICASA. One of ICASA’s conditions is for the station to operate from its own dedicated premises.
The two main challenges are money, equipment and space. The three directors share two cameras, a Sony A7 Mark IV and a Mark III, and hire sound, lighting and other gear for each shoot. They want to own all the equipment they need.
Belinda’s vision is a Langa Community TV hub with editing suites, a training room for youth workshops, and office space. She also wants facilitators accredited by the relevant SETA, so the youth training is formally recognised instead of relying only on the founders’ own experience.
