The Agrihub Langa

Mahlubi Zibi, one of Reciprocity’s long-standing navigators, now serves as Chairperson of Agrihub Langa, an organisation providing infrastructure, tools, and access to market for urban subsistence and commercial farmers in the township of Langa in Cape Town.

The Langa Agrihub is part of a cluster of 4 Agrihubs located in the Cape Flats (the collective name for mainly underserved communities in the south eastern parts of the City). The initiative started in 2022, and addresses the challenges of vulnerable and under-resourced urban communities by “introducing key enabling infrastructure, training programmes, agricultural inputs and market access to increase the resilience of existing informal urban micro-farms and food gardens.”[1]

The Agrihub was part of the 2025 Brown IE EODR programme, which helped to identify some key strategic priorities, most notably in the areas of Regenerative Farming Knowledge, Soil Health, Infrastructure, and Community Demographic. During the course of the year, and with Mahlubi’s input, the Agrihub has made some progress in each of these focus areas.

There is an opportunity to build and consolidate on the work already done and identify potential next steps, Mahlubi explains, including especially creating sustainable revenue streams for the hub around 1. the sales of compost and 2. agri volunteerism.

Mahlubi’s vision for Agrihub Langa extends beyond immediate operations. Central to this vision is to make nutritious food readily accessible, while ensuring communities maintain food sovereignty—the ability to control their own food production and distribution.
