Busy Bees

Just as the Rugby season kicks off in South Africa, we met Chairman Hani and Mister Kewana in the Langa sports centre stadium for a brief status report, 4 months after the Brown IE team visited Cape Town.

Chairman Hani and Mr Kewana touched on several areas of improvement for Busy Bees.

In terms of securing facilities and space, Busy Bees is now working to secure their own space through meetings with Siyabulela primary. Now that it has been established that the ownership of the facilities falls under the City of Cape Town rather than the Department of Education, they are following up with these departments to establish an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

When it comes to sponsorship and administration, Busy Bees is seeking assistance to develop professional proposals aligned with current standards. Some progress has been made in researching PBO (Public Benefit Organisation) status and its compliance implications, and Busy Bees keeps receiving support from its long term partner “Le Cap Sportif” for especially transportation, sports equipment and admin support.

In the area of digital tools and communication, Mr Hani also emphasised that the club was now successfully utilising the google doc and gmail accounts that the Brown IE team created for archiving and organising some of its administrative tasks. The club has also increased its social media presence, especially on Instagram, where it has seen increased followers and broader engagement.

Busy Bees has had a mixed start to the season, with one loss and one win. The junior team reached the finals but lost, while the senior boys reached the semis. In terms of community impact, there is growing attendance and support for Busy Bees brand is increasingly recognised and visible.

While Chairman Hani and Mr Kewana are very grateful for the Brown IE ideas and recommendations, the reality is that the situation of Busy Bees remains fragile due to the club’s precarious financial position and its dependency on volunteers. However thanks to the sustained efforts of Chairman Hani, Mr Kewana and their colleagues, as well as its partnerships with VUSA and Le Cap Sportif, the club is alive and kicking and looking forward to achieving its medium and long term goals in the next few months and years.
